Mini Miners: Inspiring young minds
What do you get when you combine the imaginations of an illustrator and a storyteller? A children’s book that inspires as much as it educates.
Rio Tinto approached us with a dream brief: to create an A-Z children’s story book that FIFO workers could give to their families. Something that helped to transform the big and confusing world of mining into an engaging and memorable story.

The A-Z of mining
As our readers would be on the younger side, our first task was making sure to keep the language short and simple. We decided to write the story in verse, which meant checking each line had similar syllables to ensure the words flowed nicely.
Once we had the draft ready, it was time to bring the verses to life with custom illustrations. From the iconic Rio Tinto rainbow crane through to jaw crushers, locomotives and quarries, every pencil stroke created something magical.
From little things, big things grow
To say the Mini Miners book was a hit was an understatement. The book has been embraced by the Rio Tinto community and their families, with several rounds of re-prints required to keep up with demand.
