Ashburton Youth: Giving young people a sense of identity
The Shire of Ashburton is one of four local government areas in WA’s vast Pilbara region, covering an area of just under 106,000sqm and home to over 7,000 people. Of these, a large percentage are young people aged 12-25.
With the Shire of Ashburton investing in upgrades to its Youth space and offerings, they wanted to create a brand that resonated with young people and strengthened ties to the community.

Ay! That’s refreshing
To ensure our brand spoke to young people, we needed to speak to them first. We asked a series of questions to get a better understanding of the region, the activities kids got up to, what programs or services they’d like to see and where they saw the future heading.
These insights were invaluable to our creative process, from the tagline we created (‘Get into it’), to making the Ashburton Youth name more approachable (‘Ay!’) and using these elements to form our identity.
Utilising a hand-drawn authentic style, we developed a brand that gave young people the chance to own the different characters and truly connect with what we had to say.
Get into it
This project was something very different for the Shire of Ashburton and was enthusiastically embraced by youth, parents and councillors alike.
